Vessels Donated to SeaKeepers

The Range of Vessels SeaKeepers Has Accepted

The donor program is intentionally broad. Sail and power, runabouts to superyachts. Recent acceptances include sportfish vessels, sailing yachts, motor yachts, and tender support craft. Vessels with liens are evaluated case-by-case; vessels needing repair are evaluated case-by-case. The question is not vessel category — it is whether a defensible fair-market value can be established and whether the donation makes financial sense for the owner.

If you have a vessel and an idea of its market value, that is enough information for a first conversation. We come back within 24–48 hours with an honest read on whether donation is the right play.

After Donation

From Title Transfer to Disposition

When a vessel is donated outright to SeaKeepers, title transfers to the 501(c)(3). From that point, three pathways are possible — selected on the merits of the specific vessel:

  • Charitable sale. The most common pathway. The vessel is sold through our partner Boathouse Auctions on a 30-day campaign. Proceeds fund the SeaKeepers mission.
  • Refit and lease. For vessels with significant residual value, SeaKeepers may invest in upgrades and lease the vessel to qualified individuals under structured terms.
  • Direct program use. A subset of vessels enter the DISCOVERY research fleet directly — hosting marine science, citizen science, or educational outreach.

Which pathway makes sense for your vessel is a conversation we have during the free evaluation. The deduction is the same regardless — fair-market value at the time of donation.
